While every map on a plane can be colored with four colors so that no two adjacent countries are the same color, maps on other surfaces may require more colors. This jewelry set displays maps requiring the maximum number of colors for three surfaces. The bracelet, bead crochet with a bead-woven closure, is a double torus in eight colors, each of which touches all the others.

The gold bead in the center of the pink and blue spiral is strictly ornamental. The pendant is a bead-crochet torus with seven colors, and all of the color contacts are visible from the front side. The bead-woven earrings are each four-color maps in the plane.
With over beads in total, the entire set is wearable topology at its finest. Hyperbolic Constellation.

Glass beads, crochet cotton thread. I asked Dr. Designing in fiber arts knitting, crocheting, quilting, sewing, etc. If you also happen to have a background in a STEM [science, technology, engineering and math] field, the connections between fiber arts and mathematics are practically impossible to ignore. For me, combining the two began when my daughter and I learned the craft of bead crochet.

Immediately, we wanted to design our own patterns and were surprised by how tricky it was. One of the very first challenges discussed in our book has a connection to this puzzle. It involves a physical model and visual proof related to the famous Four Color Theorem in mathematics. I particularly love puzzles that can be easily stated in a purely visual or physical way, without the use of numbers or equations. And there is an additional nerdy pleasure — wearability!

Years after creating our first bead crochet seven-color torus bracelets, it occurred to me to want a matching scarf. But sewn fabric is a different medium with its own unique constraints such as a need for hidden seams and, out of those, new puzzles emerged.
Whenever I sit down to craft a new object, I seem to end up puzzling and learning something new. Thank you, Ellie Baker.

Crafting Conundrums: Puzzles and Patterns for the Bead Crochet Artist
About this product Product Information Designed for crafters, puzzle lovers, and pattern designers alike, Crafting Conundrums: Puzzles and Patterns for the Bead Crochet Artist provides methods, challenges, and patterns that offer a springboard for creative exploration. Those wishing to design their own patterns will find many useful tools, template patterns, and a new methodology for understanding how to do so even without using math. Puzzle lovers without previous kwledge of bead crochet will also find ample inspiration for learning the craft.
The first part of the book describes the basic requirements and constraints of a bead crochet pattern and explains what makes designing in this medium so tricky. The authors present their new design framework and offer insight on how best to approach design choices and issues unique to bead crochet.

The second part presents a series of bead crochet design challenges informed by colorful bits of mathematics, including topology, graph theory, kt theory, tessellations, and wallpaper groups. Each chapter in this section begins with a design puzzle accompanied by an introduction to the mathematical idea that inspired it. The authors then discuss what made the challenge difficult, present some of their solutions, and describe the thinking and ideas behind their approach. The final part contains nearly original bead crochet patterns, including solutions to all the design challenges.
This part also provides a tutorial on the fundamentals of bead crochet technique.
